Descrição

"Rip! A Remix Manifesto is a feature documentary I wrote and directed over the course of six years in co-production with the National Film Board of Canada and Eyesteelfilm. During the time I made the film, the music industry was undergoing massive disruption - both in terms of how music was distributed, but how music was being made. While file sharing had made it possible for fan’s all around the world to find nearly any music they could imagine for free, it also made possible a new culture of remix and collage. New forms of expression were being created, and were smashing headlong into more traditional notions of copyright.

I documented this period of time by filming with Lawrence Lessig as he created the Creative Commons movement. I also followed a remix artist named Girl Talk whose career was exploding thanks to the new connectivity that the Internet allowed artists to create with their fans.

As the film was being made, I operated a website, Open Source Cinema, where users could remix portions of the film in progress. They also uploaded their own clips to be included in the film. In the days before youtube, this was new territory. The film became known as the "first open source documentary".

The film was broadcast in 13 countries and seen millions of times, was featured in dozens of international film festival, and remains a staple of university courses."
